Displacer Beast Vs Blink Dogs

In most accounts of Dungeons and Dragons canon, the Displacer Beast was a creation of the Unseelie Fey, who count amongst their number the darker side of the Feywild. Used a shock and awe beasts of war, these monstrosities were utilized in numerous battles between the courts of elves for centuries. However, after some time, the Displacer Beasts would escape, proliferate, and become hunters of the same masters that once created them. Some even managed to find their way into the Prime Material Plane, where they would go on to wreak havoc and inspire tales of creatures that shimmered with unnatural magics, which made them difficult to strike, let alone kill.

The natural enemy of the Displacer Beast is the relatively intelligent race of sentient hounds called Blink Dogs, which were initially bred by the Fey courts to hunt down their pantherlike cousins. For eons, Displacer Beasts and Blink Dogs have worked to eradicate the other species, to no avail. As the unseen war still rages on, humans and other mortal races find themselves hunted as prey for the six-legged cats, with only the foolish or bravest adventurers seeking such dangerous game.

The Displacer Beast utilizes mild illusion magic, the type which is expected in the Feywild, to create illusory duplicates of itself and project its image beyond the slender body of the creature. While they are challenging to hunt, often requiring large packs of Blink Dogs to fall a single one, the hide of the Displacer Beast can be utilized by master leatherworkers to create clothing and cloaks that mimic the same illusory magic.
