Backstory Of The East's Earthen Iris
Jordtuun spawned from the nightmare of a previous beholder, where a blue demon came from the earth to assassinate him. In his birth, Jordtuun made that dream a reality and has lived for centuries, slowly carving new tunnels into the Underdark, seeing the entire system as a series of organs. He has gone blind due to decades in the dark and leaves earthen traps in his wake, ensuring that he cannot be followed as he searches for what he believes to be the 'Heart of the Earth.'
Any underdark denizens Jordtuun encounters, he tortures and questions about the Heart of the Earth. At first, few had any information. However, after centuries Jordtuun has created a new mythology within the races of the Underdark, where the current generation has heard rumors of an Earthen Heart wherein a great multi-eyed monster lies. This narrative has looped back to Jordtuun, and now he hears whispered rumblings of the Heart of the Earth from his victims, despite the story finding its roots in his bloody history.
Jordtuun is unique in that any tunnel he has dug with his disintegration ray is considered his lair so long as he is within one mile of the caves. Once Jordtuun abandons a tunnel, the traps become weakened and eventually fade with time, his alien essence being naturally purified. A small cult of kobolds with psionic abilities follows in Jordtuun's wake, learning from his traps and worshiping the beholder as a reincarnation of some lost god of the earth.
Roleplay
Jordtuun is a narcissist who hates to be dirty and constantly casts prestidigitation as he digs, meaning his pace is slow, despite using a disintegrating eye laser.
He is sustained by feeding on the kobold society that follows in his wake as they bring food to their master and are eaten if caught within the beholder's gaze.
Jordtuun hates the Kobolds as much as any other mortal race, leaving the traps they worship behind in an attempt to kill them, although it has the opposite effect and further deepens the cult's fervor.
Jordtuun is cowardly to the core and will flee from adventurers who pose any threat, running when reaching half hitpoints. He prefers to prey on the weak and will avoid combat through the use of traps and will collapse the tunnels around him to evade or kill assailants. As his lair travels with him deeper into the earth, he does not have a traditional loot hoard and instead carries magical jewelry on his ten eye stalks taken from the victims who have crossed his path.
